How it works
Topo & Timber turns a hike you did into a 3D printed map of the real terrain, with your route raised on top and your words on a nameplate, mounted on wood. Here’s how an order goes from your route to your shelf.
How a custom 3D trail map is made
- Add your route. Upload a GPX file of your hike, or choose “Build it for me” and tell us the trail, a link or your itinerary. Ryan traces it for you.
- Design it. Pick a size, one of 5 terrain and route color pairings, how dramatic the relief looks, a wood backer, and up to three lines for the nameplate. The 3D preview updates as you go.
- Check out. Pay securely through Stripe. Shipping is a flat fee and sales tax is added where required.
- Approve your preview. We email you a preview of your finished design. Nothing is printed until you approve it, and you can ask for changes.
- We make and ship it. Your terrain and route are 3D printed, then mounted on wood by hand. Most keepsakes ship about two weeks after you approve the preview, with tracking by email.

Questions
What is a Topo & Timber keepsake?
A 3D printed model of the real terrain around a hike you did, with your exact route raised in a contrasting color, mounted on wood with a nameplate in your words. It’s made to order by a small studio in the U.S.
What do I need to order one?
A GPX file of your route works best. Most hiking and fitness apps can export one from the activity page, often on their website. Some apps only allow exports on a paid plan. If you don’t have a GPX, choose “Build it for me” and describe the trail.
Can you make one without a GPX file?
Yes. Choose “Build it for me” (+$50) and send the trail name, a link to the trail, or your itinerary. Ryan traces the route and emails you a preview to approve before anything is printed.
How big is it, and what wood can I choose?
Two sizes: 150 × 150 mm (about 6 × 6 in) and 190 × 190 mm (about 7.5 × 7.5 in), measured as the printed terrain. Backers are natural alder, walnut, live-edge slab. Live-edge slabs are natural wood, so each one’s shape, bark and grain is different.
How much does it cost?
Small $119, large $159. Walnut adds $20 and “Build it for me” adds $50. Shipping is a flat $12 in the U.S., plus sales tax where required. The first 25 keepsake orders get a founding price of $99 small or $139 large.
How long does it take?
After checkout we email a preview to approve. Most keepsakes ship about two weeks after you approve it. If you need it by a date, order early and approve the preview quickly. Any holiday deadline is shown on the home page.
Where does the terrain come from?
Real elevation data from the U.S. Geological Survey, so routes in the United States only for now. Your exact route is laid on top of that terrain.
Is my route kept private?
Yes. When you upload a GPX file, names, times and health data are removed in your browser and only coordinates and elevations are kept. A saved design can only be opened with its private link.
Does it make a good gift?
Yes, and you don’t need their route. Buy a gift card by email or as a printed mini terrain card mailed to you (+$10), and they design their own keepsake from their own hike. Gift cards never expire.
Can I 3D print it myself?
Yes. Print-it-yourself files are $24: multicolor 3MF files for Bambu Studio and other multicolor printers, plus the nameplate, for personal use. They download right after payment.
What if it arrives damaged or something is wrong?
Email a photo to hello@topoandtimber.com within 7 days of delivery and we’ll remake it free. You can cancel for a full refund any time before you approve your preview. Because each piece is personalized, we can’t take returns once printing starts.
Who makes these?
